Tim Mondragon was born and raised in Leadville. In 1980 he graduated from Lake County High School with a tremendous cross-country and track career to his credit.

In cross-country, Tim was a member of three Pikes Peak League Championship teams and three Colorado State championship teams. As a senior, Tim was team captain; Pikes Peak League Champion; and the Colorado State Champion.

In track, Tim was a three-time Pikes Peak League Champion; twice in the 880yd and once in the 1500m. His senior year, he went on to win the State meet in both events. His 4:06.78 1500m and his 1:56.12 800m set State high school classification records.


His half-mile record stood for 16 years.Tim also played basketball at LCHS, earning two varsity letters and being named to the Pikes Peak All-Conference Team his senior year.

After high school, Tim accepted a running scholarship to the University of Southern Colorado (CSU-Pueblo). He lettered in cross-country and track all four years and was named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team five times. Tim competed in two NAIA National Cross Country Championships and three NAIA National Track & Field Championships. During his collegiate career, Tim broke five USC Track & Field records:

Indoor 2-mile (1984): 9:19.10
Outdoor 800m (1983): 1:52.98
Outdoor 5000m (1984): 14:43.08
Sprint Medley (1983): 3:15.57
4 x 800 Relay (1981): 7:54.94


Tim graduated from USC with a BS in Physical Education. He started a teaching and coaching career in Cotopaxi where he remained for 9 years. While in Cotopaxi, he coached track & field, cross-country, volleyball, and basketball.

Tim then moved on to teach and coach in Pueblo, where he remains to date. He has coached women's basketball at Pueblo South High School and cross-country, track and women's basketball at Centennial High School.
